In the early morning hours of Tuesday's school day, two Highline teachers got big surprises when Superintendent Welch paid an unannounced visit to their classrooms! He was there to announce the selections of Highline's Teacher of the Year for Elementary and Secondary Education. Selected this year are: Michele Brees, a 5th grade teacher at Madrona Elementary and Alexis McFarland, a language arts teacher at the Academy of Citizenship and Empowerment.
In his announcement, Superintendent Welch praised both Michelle and Alexis for their "above and beyond" commitment to children and the high standards they set for their students. Michele and Alexis have embraced the district's work with literacy and math and have proven track records with student outcomes. In addition, both are actively involved with community efforts to support children.

Hewlett Packard, the district's technology partner, provided laptop computers for the winners. And, Tom Russell of the Highline Foundation for Excellence provided software to enable these teachers to create their own classroom websites aimed at enhancing parent communication.
This is the first year Highline Public Schools has participated in the OSPI sponsored Teacher of the Year. Michelle and Alexis will be representing the district at the ESD level as the campaign continues. The winner of the ESD title moves on to compete for Washington State Teacher of the Year for 2007-2008.
