The Office of Accountability serves schools and the district by providing timely and accurate data and support for the purpose of improving student achievement. Our areas of responsibility include managing the district testing program, metric development and strategy management, and program evaluation. During the 2008-2009 school year, the Office of Accountability is leading two major initiatives that will support teachers and principals in making data-driven decisions for continuous improvement.
The School Board has adopted Systemwide Measures of Success (SWIMS) for Highline Public Schools. The attached scorecard shows indicators that will be monitored and tracked publicly through the district’s annual report and website. By adopting the Systemwide Measures of Success, the Board has helped the system focus, align initiatives, measure progress, and stretch to five year targets. Check back here in the coming weeks as we launch user friendly displays of the new measures and why we think they’re critical to our vision of preparing all students for college, career, and citizenship.
A Data Warehouse is being developed for the 2008-2009 school year. This initiative, led by the Department of Technology Services and the Office of Accountability, in partnership with VersiFit Technology, will allow school and district level users greatly expanded and user friendly access to data. The data warehouse merges records from our student information, assessment, and other administrative systems to support greater analysis and data-driven decision making. By the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, a principal dashboard will be developed, allowing school leaders improved access to data and easy analysis of key information. The warehouse includes a reporting suite that will allow users to quickly produce an array of reports that will provide important feedback on our practices and progress.

The Shared Accountability Initiative is an effort to empower teachers, principals, central office departments, and the school board to analyze their data and set goals that will get us closer to our vision of all students being prepared for College, Career, and Citizenship. During the past two years, five schools piloted the initiative, and recently all Senior Leadership Team members and the School Board developed accountability goals. A team that includes teachers, principals, central office leaders, HEA leaders, and a school board representative has designed an expansion of the shared accountability initiative to all districts schools and departments for the 2008-2009 school year. This work is supported by coaching from the Center for Leadership and Learning, technical assistance from the Panasonic Foundation, and funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
